Gervonta Davis is set to return to action this autumn but it looks like he will do so under the tutelage of a new, well-respected trainer, looking to rediscover his form and recapture a world title.

Davis has fought just once in the last two years, with that contest being a contentious draw against Lamont Roach Jr 15 months ago, where many fans felt ‘Tank’ was fortunate to avoid a defeat that would have cost him his undefeated record.

Since then, ‘Tank’s issues outside the ring have caused a prolonged period of inactivity that, in turn, has resulted in him being downgraded from WBA lightweight world champion to WBA ‘champion-in-recess’, with the vacant world title expected to be up for grabs soon.

Currently, Floyd Schofield is the man guaranteed to be involved in that vacant title bout, but it remains unclear whether Davis or Lucas Bahdi will be in the opposing corner, despite reports suggesting that Davis would clash with ‘Kid Austin’ in the autumn.

Instead, Schofield’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has insinuated that Bahdi may be called upon and Davis’ recent call-out of Devin Haney backs up those claims, suggesting that the Baltimore knockout artist may move up to either super-lightweight or welterweight.

Regardless, Davis is expected to return to the ring in a matter of months and, ahead of his comeback, FightsATW have reported that the 31-year-old will replace long-term head trainer Calvin Ford with Jose Benavidez Sr. – father and trainer of pound-for-pound star, David Benavidez.

“According to sources who spoke to FightsATW on the condition of anonymity, Jose Benavidez Sr., the father of unified cruiserweight and WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez, has been asked to train Davis for his upcoming fight, which has not yet been announced.

“A few weeks ago in South Florida, Davis worked out with Benavidez Sr. to see if they could mesh well. It appears things did go well, as Benavidez Sr. now has the task of getting Davis ready for his next fight.”

It remains to be seen whether Schofield or Haney is truly the target, but with Benavidez Sr in his corner, fans can perhaps expect Davis to adopt a more aggressive approach to both proposed fights.

Gervonta Davis’ future remains one of the biggest talking points in boxing.

The Baltimore star has not fought since his controversial draw with Lamont Roach Jr, a result many observers felt should have gone against him after Roach was denied a knockdown ruling. Since then, a combination of legal troubles and uncertainty surrounding his comeback plans has left fans guessing over what comes next.

More recently, however, there have been signs that ‘Tank’ Davis is edging closer to a return. The WBA has ordered him to defend his lightweight world title against mandatory challenger Floyd Schofield, with the Schofield camp previously suggesting that progress was being made behind the scenes.

While Schofield has been regarded as the frontrunner, another big-name option may now have emerged.

Taking to social media on Sunday evening, three-weight world champion Devin Haney revealed that he has been contacted directly by ‘Tank’s team.

The timing is particularly interesting given Haney’s current position. The WBO welterweight champion has recently been linked to both Shakur Stevenson and mandatory challenger Keyshawn Davis, while ‘Tank’s own immediate future appeared tied to Schofield.

US police arrested former champion boxer Gervonta Davis in Miami after his ex-partner reported him for physical assault, kidnapping and causing emotional distress.

The Miami police department said on social media that it had arrested the 31-year-old on Wednesday in a joint operation between local and federal forces.

According to the complaint by Courtney Rossel, Davis went to the striptease club where she worked on October 27, forced her to go outside and dragged her to the carpark where he grabbed her by the neck, pushed her and hit her on the back of the head.

Lightweight Davis was supposed to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami in November but the fight was called off following the accusations made against him.

Paul instead fought in December against former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, who knocked him out in six rounds.

Nicknamed “Tank” because of his power, Davis has held world titles at super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight.

He is unbeaten with 30 victories, including 28 by knockout, and one draw in his career.

It is not the first time that Davis has been accused of assault or domestic violence.

Last July, he was arrested on battery and domestic violence charges after allegedly assaulting his ex-partner and mother of his two children a month earlier.

However, the charges were dropped after the woman declined to prosecute him.

He also served 44 days in jail in 2023 after pleading guilty over a hit-and-run crash three years earlier that left four people in hospital.

Eddie Hearn says the long-awaited showdown between British rivals Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua must take place in the UK under the terms of the fight deal signed three months ago.

Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh reportedly wants to stage the fight –- which is expected to take place in October or November –- at a time that would attract the largest global audience.

But were the fight to take place at Wembley Stadium, any plans to stage the bout with a 2:00 am (0200 GMT) start would require an exemption to the London venue’s curfew restrictions.

There is now talk the fight could take place at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

But Hearn, the promoter of Joshua, insists his man has signed up for a UK fight only and the contract would have to be renegotiated to move elsewhere.

Anthony Joshua

“There’s a reason we put contracts together,” Hearn said after Joshua’s second-round stoppage of Kristian Prenga in Jeddah on Saturday kept him on course for a Fury showdown, little more than 24 hours after fellow former world heavyweight champion had stopped Mariusz Wach in Thailand.

He added: “We insisted that this fight was in the UK. I know that AJ will sometimes want to be a little bit of a peacekeeper, but the reality is he said to me, ‘I want the fight in the UK. This is a British fight’. I can’t agree more.

“Turki Alalshikh is our partner and has been an unbelievable supporter of Anthony Joshua…We would have conversations, but the only way the fight doesn’t take place in England is if Anthony Joshua and myself agree to it because we have a legally binding contract that took a long, long time to negotiate

“Let’s be honest this is a fight for the British public.”

Joshua insisted Wembley, a 90,000 capacity stadium in north London best known as the headquarters of English football, was the only choice for his fight with Fury.

“When these conversations started, there was no other venue or location that was ever mentioned,” he said. “It was simple. This is the road map. You fight, come back, fight, and then providing you’re victorious, you’ll be fighting Tyson Fury in the UK, basically Wembley.

“I wouldn’t expect it to be at Tottenham (Hotspur Stadium) or the Principality Stadium (Cardiff) respectfully. It’s just got that history when you think of Wembley.”

The victory in Jeddah keeps Joshua on course for a long-awaited heavyweight showdown with British rival Tyson Fury later this year.

British Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua fought back from an early scare to stop Albanian Kristian Prenga in the second round on Saturday night before delivering an emotional tribute to his late friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

The victory in Jeddah keeps Joshua on course for a long-awaited heavyweight showdown with British rival Tyson Fury later this year.

According to Sky News, Joshua was knocked down twice inside the opening 20 seconds after being caught by a vicious uppercut from the Albanian knockout specialist, raising fears of a major upset.

However, the former world champion responded emphatically, flattening Prenga with a barrage of right hands in the second round to secure his 30th career victory.

The fight marked Joshua’s first appearance since he survived a car crash in December that claimed the lives of Ghami and Ayodele.

Speaking after the bout, an emotional Joshua dedicated the win to his late friends.

Anthony Joshua

“It’s more than punch power. That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina, that was the families. It hurts to even talk about it. It has been tough. It’s my brothers. I don’t want to talk about it.”

Fury had also recorded a stoppage victory on Friday, defeating Polish veteran Mariusz Wach in a non-televised contest in Thailand. Although Fury later said he would not travel to Saudi Arabia for a face-off with Joshua, both fighters remain on course for a potential November clash.

Prenga entered the fight with all 20 of his previous victories coming by knockout and had won 16 consecutive bouts since suffering his only career defeat in February 2017.

With both Joshua and Fury emerging victorious over the weekend and contracts reportedly already signed, their long-awaited showdown now appears set for the autumn.

The bout could reportedly take place at Wembley Stadium at 2 a.m. UK time to accommodate a global audience, although Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has indicated that the United States remains the preferred venue for fight organiser Turki Alalshikh.

Joshua also fired a warning to Fury after the fight.

“I am going to rip his heart out. I am the meanest and most vicious champion there has ever been!

“All jokes aside, I respect everything he has done and achieved but we are here now. I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat.”

The former heavyweight champion also praised Prenga for his performance.

“He’s a strong guy and I think Eddie [Hearn] wants to sign him now!

“He is going to do well and has a bright future. Maybe with a bit more experience, he will be up there with the rest of us.

“He is strong and durable and gave me a good test but this is what champions do, we rise. We get knocked down and stand up. That’s life.”

British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua got his career back on track on Saturday night, recovering from two early knockdowns to stop previously unbeaten Albanian Kristian Prenga in the second round in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and setting the stage for a long-awaited showdown with Tyson Fury later this year, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Tyson Fury

Joshua’s comeback got off to a disastrous start when Prenga, who had entered the bout with a perfect record of 20 knockout wins from 20 fights, sent him crashing to the canvas within the opening 20 seconds with a thunderous uppercut.

The former two-time world heavyweight champion was floored a second time before the round was out, briefly raising the prospect of one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing.

The 36-year-old, however, showed the heart that has defined much of his career, using his jab to steady himself before unloading a barrage of heavy right hands in the second round that trapped Prenga against the ropes and forced the referee to step in, handing the Albanian the first defeat of his professional career and improving Joshua’s own record to 30 wins from 34 fights, with 27 by knockout.

Speaking about the prospect of finally facing Fury, Joshua struck a defiant tone while acknowledging his rival’s achievements.

Anthony Joshua

“I respect everything he has done and everything that he has achieved, but as a fighting person and as someone who has been calling for this fight for a long time, we are here now. Shout out to His Excellency, shout out to Eddie Hearn for making these opportunities possible, and I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat,” he said.

“You know what I have learned, I cannot be stopped, I am not going to be stopped, I am not going to be denied.”

The victory marked Joshua’s first appearance since the car crash in Nigeria in December that claimed the lives of two of his closest friends and members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

A visibly emotional Joshua, who wore camouflage gear bearing the names of his late friends on his chest, dedicated the win to their memory.

“It is more than punch power. That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina, that was the families. It hurts to even talk about it. It has been tough. They are my brothers, but I do not want to talk about it,” he said in the ring afterwards.

“It is what champions do. We rise, we get knocked down, and we stand up, and we keep going. That is life’s motto.”

Joshua’s win came a day after Fury secured a seventh-round technical knockout over forty-six-year-old Polish veteran Mariusz Wach in an untelevised bout in Thailand, roughly 4,000 miles away, with both former world champions now having come through their respective warm-up assignments.

Promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that contracts for the domestic showdown had already been signed, although a venue was yet to be finalised, with Wembley Stadium among the options being considered alongside the possibility of hosting the fight in the United States.

“We have signed a contract, everything is done. But to be honest with you, tonight is all about the strength that he showed to even be here tonight, and the strength that he had to show in that fight. When you go down a couple of times in the first round, and you are looking like your career might be over, he had to go to the depths one more time to get up and fight on,” Hearn said.

Mike Tyson has said he will always back one man to emerge victorious in an all-British heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Tyson Fury

The former two-time world champions completed their respective warm-up fights this weekend, albeit with ‘AJ’ having to survive two knockdowns against Kristian Prenga.

Remarkably, the 36-year-old was floored by a right uppercut within the first 20 seconds of their contest, before hitting the canvas once more in the opening round.

Anthony Joshua

These knockdowns were made even more dramatic by the fact that, prior to Saturday evening, Prenga was given virtually no hope of an upset in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Joshua, meanwhile, was heavily favoured to win via an early stoppage, which ultimately materialised after he dropped his opponent in round two.

Conversely, Fury appeared to encounter no real drama against the 46-year-old Mariusz Wach, who afforded him seven rounds of low-risk action in Thailand.

Anthony Joshua

As a result of their victories, it now seems as though the wheels are in motion for Fury and Joshua to collide later this year, with an official announcement expected to emerge before long.

But even without having reviewed their latest performances, Tyson has told Ring Magazine that he will always favour ‘The Gypsy King’.

“If Tyson comes in right and avoids those punches, it’s going to be interesting. Joshua’s a fast puncher.

“I love Tyson Fury. [The fact he is named ‘Tyson’ is] why I can never go against him.”

Prior to his stoppage victory over Wach on Friday, Fury ended 16 months of inactivity by unanimously outpointing Arslanbek Makhmudov in April.

American star Shakur Stevenson, the four-division world champion who recently beat Teofimo Lopez, has signed with promotional powerhouse Zuffa Boxing; watch Callum Walsh fight Tyler Denny on August 8 live on Sky Sports as part of Zuffa Boxing 10.

Shakur Stevenson has signed with new promotional powerhouse Zuffa Boxing.

American star Stevenson is regarded as one of the best boxers in the world today.

He became a four-division world champion after defeating Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden in his most recent fight in January.

The 29-year-old, from Newark, New Jersey, won an Olympic silver medal when he was just a teenager and is one of the most talented boxers in America.

Gervonta Davis has been called out for a “best vs the best” encounter, which could end up being the final fight of his career.

Gervonta Davis

Davis has not fought since his controversial draw with Lamont Roach, who was considered incredibly unfortunate not to emerge victorious in March 2025.

‘Tank’ then entertained talks for an immediate rematch and WBA title defence, only to instead schedule an exhibition match with Jake Paul later that year.

In the end, though, Davis was removed from the event – which was set for last November – on account of him facing allegations of domestic violence.

Since then, he has remained out of the ring but is now angling for a return, albeit after rejecting an opportunity to reclaim his WBA lightweight title against Floyd Schofield.

For Davis, however, it appears the world titles are neither here nor there, even if he has been made WBA ‘champion in recess’ at 135lbs.

And the same, it seems, could be said of Shakur Stevenson, who holds the WBO super-lightweight strap but is not overly bothered about becoming an undisputed king.

shakur stevenson

After announcing his signing with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, the 29-year-old told Chris Mannix that he sees his legacy being defined by the fights themselves, rather than whatever belts are on the line.

“If I go fight against Tank, no one cares whether it’s for undisputed or not. They just care that it’s the best vs the best.

“At first, [Davis] said he wouldn’t fight me. Now, I heard him say on Twitter that he will fight me, so it sounds like his tune is changing.

“He may not admit it, but I think he’s got a lot of respect for me as a fighter, which is why I think he plans on fighting me as his last fight on his way out the door.”

The two Americans have been on a collision course for quite some time, yet only now does Stevenson seem to believe there is a realistic chance of facing his rival.

Gervonta Davis’ comeback has been ruled out for the rest of the year.

Gervonta Davis

It comes as bad news for Devin Haney, who had been pursuing an autumn showdown with ‘Tank’.

Haney revealed last week that Davis’ team had reached out to make the fight.

However, Haney’s father and manager, Bill, was informed by Al Haymon of PBC that Davis won’t be able to compete until the first quarter of 2027.

The development, which was relayed to Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger on Tuesday, leaves a WBO mandatory defence against Keyshawn Davis as the most likely next move for Haney.

‘The Dream’ was ordered to defend his WBO welterweight title against Keyshawn earlier this month.

But he has been chasing bigger paydays against ‘Tank’ and Shakur Stevenson as of late.

The current state of Devin Haney vs Shakur Stevenson

shakur stevenson and devin haney

Haney’s father claims negotiations with Stevenson have stalled after his son agreed to meet the WBC super lightweight champion at a 144lbs catchweight.

“We have Shakur Stevenson standing in the way of Devin’s quest to be on the Mount Rushmore of boxing,” Bill told Ring Magazine.

“Because with three divisions and the youngest undisputed champion, I don’t know if we’re going to get all the respect we need unless we run through all of them.

“All these fake public negotiations … Real negotiations happen offline.

“I’m the truth [you] will see when [you] get in front of me!!”

Gervonta Davis’ legal issues leave future uncertain

While Haney’s next steps are now a little clearer, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Davis.

He hasn’t set foot in the ring since his controversial draw with Lamont Roach in March 2025 and has repeatedly seen his next fight pushed back over the last 16 months amid mounting legal issues.

Davis had been set to box Jake Paul in a high-profile exhibition bout in November, but the fight was cancelled after a civil lawsuit was filed against ‘Tank’ alleging domestic abuse.

The Baltimore boxer is accused of battery and kidnapping stemming from an altercation at a Miami Gentleman’s club in October last year.

A Maryland judge issued a warrant for his arrest in April after the incident was deemed to have potentially violated Davis’ probation order for a hit and run in November 2020.
