The victory in Jeddah keeps Joshua on course for a long-awaited heavyweight showdown with British rival Tyson Fury later this year.

British Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua fought back from an early scare to stop Albanian Kristian Prenga in the second round on Saturday night before delivering an emotional tribute to his late friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

The victory in Jeddah keeps Joshua on course for a long-awaited heavyweight showdown with British rival Tyson Fury later this year.

According to Sky News, Joshua was knocked down twice inside the opening 20 seconds after being caught by a vicious uppercut from the Albanian knockout specialist, raising fears of a major upset.

However, the former world champion responded emphatically, flattening Prenga with a barrage of right hands in the second round to secure his 30th career victory.

The fight marked Joshua’s first appearance since he survived a car crash in December that claimed the lives of Ghami and Ayodele.

Speaking after the bout, an emotional Joshua dedicated the win to his late friends.

“It’s more than punch power. That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina, that was the families. It hurts to even talk about it. It has been tough. It’s my brothers. I don’t want to talk about it.”

Fury had also recorded a stoppage victory on Friday, defeating Polish veteran Mariusz Wach in a non-televised contest in Thailand. Although Fury later said he would not travel to Saudi Arabia for a face-off with Joshua, both fighters remain on course for a potential November clash.

Prenga entered the fight with all 20 of his previous victories coming by knockout and had won 16 consecutive bouts since suffering his only career defeat in February 2017.

With both Joshua and Fury emerging victorious over the weekend and contracts reportedly already signed, their long-awaited showdown now appears set for the autumn.

The bout could reportedly take place at Wembley Stadium at 2 a.m. UK time to accommodate a global audience, although Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has indicated that the United States remains the preferred venue for fight organiser Turki Alalshikh.

Joshua also fired a warning to Fury after the fight.

“I am going to rip his heart out. I am the meanest and most vicious champion there has ever been!

“All jokes aside, I respect everything he has done and achieved but we are here now. I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat.”

The former heavyweight champion also praised Prenga for his performance.

“He’s a strong guy and I think Eddie [Hearn] wants to sign him now!

“He is going to do well and has a bright future. Maybe with a bit more experience, he will be up there with the rest of us.

“He is strong and durable and gave me a good test but this is what champions do, we rise. We get knocked down and stand up. That’s life.”

The 36-year-old was making his return to the ring ahead of a dream match-up against former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, and since he was in a car accident in Nigeria last December, where his two friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele were killed.

Anthony Joshua has won his comeback bout against Kristian Prenga with a second-round knockout.

The 36-year-old was making his return to the ring ahead of a dream match-up against former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury this year.

While no date or venue has been set, speculation is rife that the two British boxers will meet at Wembley Stadium in November.

Held in Jeddah on Saturday night, Prenga was actually on top during the opening round – sending Joshua to the mat with an uppercut within the first 20 seconds.

Joshua was then knocked down again before the first round ended, turning it around after catching the Albanian with a jab before hitting him with hooks against the ropes.

It’s also Joshua’s first fight since he was in a car accident in Nigeria last December, where his two friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele were killed.

The two were members of the boxer’s team and long-term friends.

Speaking in the ring after his win, Joshua said: “That was more than punch power. It was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina… It’s been tough.

“It hurts me talking about it, man.”

On his next opponent, Joshua smiled as he delivered an homage to Mike Tyson: “I am going to rip his heart out. I am the meanest and most vicious champion there has ever been!

“All jokes aside, there are two sides to this thing… I respect everything (Fury) has done and achieved, but as someone who has been calling for this fight for some time, it is here now.

“I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat.”

Anthony Joshua makes an emotional return to the ring on July 25, his first fight since he was injured in a car crash that killed two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, in Nigeria on Dec. 29.

Grief from personal loss has inspired boxers to produce some incredible performances. As Joshua approaches the first of two planned fights in 2026, the question is whether he can do the same.

Joshua’s nontitle bout against Albanian Kristian Prenga (20-1, 20 KOs) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is a warmup for his planned fight against fellow former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (35-2-1, 24 KOs) later this year. The fight against Prenga will also be the first time Joshua faces a serious opponent in nearly two years.

Before Joshua’s dismantling of YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in December, his last performance was a Round 5 KO loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024. Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) will be 37 years old by the time he fights Fury, but grief has motivated boxers to achieve great feats, and the two-time champion has recently been training with the best heavyweight in the world, Oleksandr Usyk.

Sports like boxing can help to deal with personal tragedy and trauma, according to Psychology Today, by reconnecting to life through physical activity.

“Boxing is not only good for the competitive side of things; it’s quite therapeutic,” Joshua said in June. “It gives me a purpose in my life. I’m content.”

As well as suffering, boxers have also found that grief can be motivational and the pursuit of titles a way of dealing with the loss of someone close.
