Anthony Joshua has been the UK’s heavyweight superstar for over a decade and it seems as though his likely successor Moses Itauma could be on the verge of his own world title shot, and now ‘AJ’, has shared his thoughts on Itauma using just one word.

Itauma has stopped 12 of his first 14 opponents and is yet to box beyond the sixth round in his professional boxing career, but he finds himself homing in on world honours, with an August outing against Filip Hrgovic seemingly the only obstacle to a world title challenge.

Anthony Joshua

Meanwhile, Joshua began his pro career in an even more destructive style, after claiming the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, winning by stoppage in his first 20 fights – a run which lasted up until a points win in a world title unification against Joseph Parker.

Like ‘AJ’, Itauma could get his hands on the heavyweight crown in fight number 16, with Oleksandr Usyk’s vacation of three world titles opening the door to challenges against Murat Gassiev (WBA), Agit Kabayel (WBC) and for the vacant IBF title, against Frank Sanchez.

Moses Itauma

Speaking with Ring Magazine, in a game of word association, Joshua was obviously impressed by the form of the 21-year-old, labelling Britain’s hottest prospect simply as ‘talent’.

Itauma will headline in the British capital for the first time when he takes on Croatia’s Hrgovic at the O2 Arena on Saturday, August 29, as he seeks to further build his star power ahead of a world title bid, where he could potentially become the second youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) has declared Gervonta Davis the Champion in Recess at lightweight while designating Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi to fight for the division’s now-vacant title.

The Championships Committee of the pioneering organization reviewed Davis’ legal situation and reached its decision after determining that the ongoing proceedings could prevent him from fulfilling his championship obligations in the short and medium term.

Davis captured the WBA Lightweight World Championship in 2019 after previously reigning as the organization’s Super Featherweight World Champion since 2018. The American owns an outstanding professional record of 30 wins, one draw, and 28 knockouts.

Gervonta Davis

According to publicly available information, Davis is currently facing pending legal proceedings in the United States that could result in a trial and affect his ability to defend the title within the timeframes established by WBA regulations.

As a result, and in accordance with Championship Rules C.21, C.22, and C.27, as well as the provisions of the WBA Code of Ethics, the Association has declared him Champion in Recess.

As part of the resolution, the WBA has ordered Schofield and Bahdi to contest the vacant WBA Lightweight title in a bout that will shape the immediate future of one of boxing’s most competitive divisions.

The resolution has been officially communicated to all parties involved. It takes effect immediately and supersedes any previous rulings involving the aforementioned boxers. Any issues that may arise during the process will be resolved in accordance with the WBA’s internal rules and regulations.

Gervonta Davis’ comeback has been ruled out for the rest of the year.

It comes as bad news for Devin Haney, who had been pursuing an autumn showdown with ‘Tank’.

Haney revealed last week that Davis’ team had reached out to make the fight.

However, Haney’s father and manager, Bill, was informed by Al Haymon of PBC that Davis won’t be able to compete until the first quarter of 2027.

Gervonta Davis

The development, which was relayed to Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger on Tuesday, leaves a WBO mandatory defence against Keyshawn Davis as the most likely next move for Haney.

‘The Dream’ was ordered to defend his WBO welterweight title against Keyshawn earlier this month.

The current state of Devin Haney vs Shakur Stevenson

Haney’s father claims negotiations with Stevenson have stalled after his son agreed to meet the WBC super lightweight champion at a 144lbs catchweight.

Devin Haney

“We have Shakur Stevenson standing in the way of Devin’s quest to be on the Mount Rushmore of boxing,” Bill told Ring Magazine.

“Because with three divisions and the youngest undisputed champion, I don’t know if we’re going to get all the respect we need unless we run through all of them.

Gervonta Davis’ legal issues leave future uncertain

While Haney’s next steps are now a little clearer, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Davis.

He hasn’t set foot in the ring since his controversial draw with Lamont Roach in March 2025 and has repeatedly seen his next fight pushed back over the last 16 months amid mounting legal issues.

Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney

Davis had been set to box Jake Paul in a high-profile exhibition bout in November, but the fight was cancelled after a civil lawsuit was filed against ‘Tank’ alleging domestic abuse.

The Baltimore boxer is accused of battery and kidnapping stemming from an altercation at a Miami Gentleman’s club in October last year.

A Maryland judge issued a warrant for his arrest in April after the incident was deemed to have potentially violated Davis’ probation order for a hit and run in November 2020.

A major update has been revealed on when Gervonta Davis may potentially return to the ring.

There has been many rumours regarding the future of ‘Tank’ over the past few months, with the Baltimore fighter having not been in action since his controversial majority decision draw with Lamont Roach back in March 2025.

Gervonta DavisAny hopes of seeing that anytime soon appear to have been ruled out though, after Mike Coppinger revealed that Haney’s father and trainer Bill stated ‘Tank’ won’t be ready to return until next year.

Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney

“Devin Haney now looking to fight either Shakur Stevenson or Keyshawn Davis this fall, Bill Haney tells me, after he was told by Al Haymon that Gervonta Davis won’t be available to fight until early 2027.”

While boxing fans will be disappointed to have to wait longer for ‘Tank’ to return, possible fights between Haney and either Shakur Stevenson or Keyshawn Davis would still act as major attractions

Tyson Fury’s showdown with Anthony Joshua could be held at Wembley Stadium – providing local authorities agree to stage the fight at a later time.

The long-time heavyweight rivals are set to go head-to-head in November – a fight which has been over a decade in the making. Fury returned to the ring back in April after a year hiatus, defeating Arslanbek Makhmudov in front of over 60,000 fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury

Just moments later, Fury demanded a clash with Joshua – who was sitting ringside – but the latter refused to engage in all of the theatrics. Just days later, the two stars agreed to a fight and are expected to meet in the middle of the ring before the end of the year.

England’s most iconic stadium, Wembley, has been mooted to host the monumental occasion, but the SiFO Stadium in Los Angeles and Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena have also been rumoured as potential venues. Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh revealed earlier this week that he wants to stage the fight at a time that works for a global audience.

England, but we want the time zone of all the world, especially in America. If they allowed us to have Wembley late in the night, we want to do it in England. It is about the time and viewership. We will talk with the mayors and Prince Abdullah (bin Khaled bin Sultan).”

Both Fury and Joshua are set to compete in respective tune-up fights later this month, and providing they both come away unscathed, their fight will be made official. Former two-time heavyweight world champion Fury is expected to take on Poland’s Mariusz Wach in Pattaya, Thailand, on July 24.

Joshua, on the other hand, will fight a day later – taking on unknown heavyweight contender Kristian Prenga in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. ‘AJ’ has not fought since knocking out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul back in December.

A few weeks after Anthony Joshua vs. was announced for July 25, live on DAZN and Ultimate Tier, Tyson Fury swooped right in and announced that he’ll be fighting former world heavyweight title challenger Mariusz Wach on July 24.

Anthony Joshua

Way to steal some thunder and shift the pressure onto Joshua, right? Well, barring any unforeseen events, ‘AJ’ and ‘The Gypsy King’ will clash during the fourth quarter of 2026 in a massive heavyweight tilt that has been a decade-plus in the making.

There’s something I really like about the way this collision course is taking shape and there’s a particular item that’s sparking a sharp cause of concern. I explain both below here.

After Tyson Fury outpointed Arslanbek Makhmudov via unanimous decision in April, ‘The Gypsy King’ and Anthony Joshua had a compelling exchange. It took place when Fury grabbed the mic and tried to force AJ’s hand into verbally accepting a fight. “I challenge you, Anthony Joshua, to fight me, ‘The Gypsy King, NEXT!” Fury exclaimed, his voice roaring with each word. “DO YOU ACCEPT MY CHALLENGE!?”

Tyson Fury

Joshua, sitting ringside, remained composed and kept his steely gaze laser-focused on Fury without caving into his demands. Instead, he offered: “You ain’t gonna tell me what to do. I’ve been chasing you for the last 10 years. When you’re ready, you come and see me and tell me your terms and conditions, and I’ll have you in the ring when I’m ready. I’m the boss. You work for me. I’m the landlord, remember that.”

It was a moment of pristine gamesmanship.

Fast forward a bit from there and Joshua had his June 1 launch press conference to formally announce his July 25 fight against Kristian Prenga.

On June 30, Fury vs. Mariusz Wach was announced for July 24 — a day before Joshua’s fight.

Just like that, the Fury-Joshua gamesmanship continued … and I love it.

This will likely progress with their post-bout comments from their respective scraps and well into their own mega fight promotion.

The more gamesmanship we get, the better the build for this star-studded fight. I’m all for it.

What concerns me about Fury and Joshua having fights a day apart: The risk of it all

As highly-anticipated as this mega merger is between Fury and Joshua, a part of me would rather just have them head into their super fight than have these tune-up bouts. After all, is there any such thing as a true warm-up fight in the heavyweight division?

anthony joshua and tyson fury

I was there in 2019 reporting live during the buildup to Joshua vs. Andy Ruiz in New York City and like many, thought AJ was going to record another resounding knockout. Instead, Joshua got knocked down four times and stopped in one of the biggest upsets not only in boxing history, but sports, period.

Fury and Joshua will be sizeable favorites heading into their respective fights. Yet, Prenga (20-1, 20 KOs) is a 6-foot-5 Albanian who counts all 20 of his professional victories by knockout. At 46, Wach (39-13, 20 KOs) has no business defeating Fury. Still, you just never know.

If either man takes what would be an unforeseen loss, it would definitely strip some luster from their collision course. So a part of me would rather see this time used as a promotional tour that touches down in every boxing hotbed such as Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, and Riyadh before rightfully ending in England.

Yes, they could still do this kind of media blitz closer to their fight. But having these warm-up fights are a risk, especially in boxing’s glamour division where any heavyweight is one punch away from segueing from massive underdog to triumphant winner.

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are expected to meet in a long-awaited bout this year; speculation has arisen the fight could be held elsewhere; Turki Alalshikh says he wants a later start time to cater for a global audience; Sadiq Khan supported plans to host the fight in London

The blockbuster heavyweight clash between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua could still be held at Wembley Stadium, but only if local authorities agree to stage the fight at a later time than usual.Anthony Joshua and Tyson fury

Turki Alalshikh, who is organising the all-British bout, said on Monday that he wants the fight to take place at a time that works for a global audience, and intends to hold talks with the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, in a bid to obtain permission to host a late-night fight in the capital

In response, the Mayor of London said he “supported ambitions” to bring the fight to the UK capital and believes the city is the best place for it to be held.

Joshua’s preference is for the fight to take place in the UK. But ultimately, Joshua just wants the fight against Fury.

Given main events at UK bouts tend to start somewhere between 10pm and 11pm, Alalshikh would appear to be suggesting the much-anticipated matchup would start after midnight.

Speaking at an event in London, Alalshikh said: “I tell you from the beginning, it depends if England give us all that we need, we want the fight here in England.

“But we want the time zone of all the world, especially in America. If they allowed us to have Wembley late in the night, we want to do it in England. It is about the time and viewership.

anthony joshua tyson fury and alalshikh

Khan did not comment on whether the fight could be moved to later in the evening to accommodate an international audience.”London is the sporting capital of the world, and the Mayor is working to bring more of the world’s biggest events to the city,” a spokesperson for the Mayor of London said on Tuesday.

“London has staged some of the biggest boxing events in recent history at Wembley Stadium, with record crowds of over 90,000 attending heavyweight contests including Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte.

“Sadiq has made clear that London would be the perfect place to stage the long-awaited bout between Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury and the Mayor stands ready to support ambitions to bring the event to our capital as we build a better London for everyone.”

But after the statement had been published, Alalshikh took to social media to write: “Hopefully a positive statement from the Mayor of London’s office about a later start time if Fury v Joshua is in London, as so far we have been told it is not possible.”

Both of the former world champions are competing in warm-up fights later in July, with a surprise defeat or injury for either appearing to be the only potential obstacles to their meeting going ahead, most likely in November.Fury faces Mariusz Wach in Thailand on July 24, while Joshua is taking on Kristian Prenga a day later in Saudi Arabia.

Anthony Joshua could be presented with a world title shot in 2027, but first he must take care of Tyson Fury later this year.

The two British heavyweights are expected to collide in November, yet we are still awaiting the announcement of a specific date, location and promoter.

What we do know, however, is that Fury and ‘AJ’ will enter respective warm-up fights against Mariusz Wach and Kristian Prenga on the same weekend.

The first of which will take place at the Max Muay Thai Stadium in Pattaya, Thailand, on July 24, with 46-year-old veteran Wach having been selected as a low-risk opponent.

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury

It would also seem that there are no plans to broadcast this fight, but rather for it to be treated as an exclusive event for the 2,000 fans in attendance.

Joshua, meanwhile, has equally been matched with a low-risk opponent, only it could be argued that even Kristian Prenga poses a greater threat than Wach.

Regardless, the 36-year-old is heavily favoured to come through his contest in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on July 25, before entering a long-awaited showdown with Fury.

If he defeats ‘The Gypsy King’, Joshua is then likely to pursue three-time world championship glory, potentially against newly-crowned WBC ruler Agit Kabayel.

“Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, when you think you have a chance to be a three-time world champion, let’s do it. Kabayel will wait for you.

“We can make the fight but first of all I think all the fans, the British fans, want to see the Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury fight and, after that, we can see who’s best for the fight with me.

“First of all AJ [for Fury] and after, why not? This is a big fight. We can make this also in Germany in a stadium. We can make this in the UK in a stadium.

Kabayel was elevated from ‘interim’ to full WBC champion following Oleksandr Usyk’s decision to vacate his three belts and, in turn, avoid any mandatory duties

WBC heavyweight champion, Agit Kabayel, has called out British-Nigerian boxer, Anthony Joshua, for a world title shot, insisting he is prepared to wait until the Briton settles his score with Tyson Fury before facing him in the ring.

Agit KabayelJoshua and Fury are expected to collide in November, though a date, venue and promoter are yet to be confirmed. Both fighters will first step into warm-up bouts against lower-ranked opponents on the same weekend, with Fury facing Mariusz Wach in Pattaya, Thailand, on July 24, and Joshua taking on Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a day later.

Should Joshua get past Prenga and subsequently beat Fury, he is expected to pursue a third world title reign, with Kabayel standing as a likely opponent.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the German champion, who has sparred both Joshua and Fury on separate occasions in the past, said he was ready to grant either man a shot at his belt once their rivalry is settled.

“Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, when you think you have a chance to be a three-time world champion, let’s do it. Kabayel will wait for you,” he said.
